PROVO, Utah — Ryker Robinson's three doubles led BYU baseball to a 9-3 win over UVU Tuesday night at Miller Park.

"Overall, top to bottom, it was a real good night," said head coach Trent Pratt. "I was proud of how everyone competed. If we keep playing like we did tonight, good things are going to happen."

BYU (18-16) scored nine runs on 13 hits, while stranding nine runners. UVU (24-13) scored nine runs on six hits, while stranding nine.

Robinson paced BYU at the plate with three doubles, becoming the first Cougar to accomplish the feat in seven years—the last being Jarrett Perns against LMU on March 16, 2018.

On the mound, Jake Porter earned his first win of the season and the fifth of his BYU career, going three complete innings while surrending just two hits while strikeing out one. 

With the victory, BYU has now won 16 of its last 18 matchups against Utah Valley in the crosstown clash.

Game Summary

The Wolverines struck first with a run on two hits in the top of the second inning. BYU knotted up the score in the bottom of the third with a Tate Gambill single to right to bring home Cooper Vest for the Cougars’ first run of the game.

After holding UVU scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, BYU erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Robinson sparked the rally with a double to right, followed by a Luke Anderson single to left. Vest then drove in Robinson with an infield single to short, and Bryker Hurdsman’s doubled to right to drive home Anderson. Gambill then grounded out to shortstop, picking up an RBI as Vest crossed the plate. A wild pitch allowed Hurdsman to score, giving BYU a 5-1 lead through five innings.

BYU added another run in the sixth inning, for a 6-1 advantage. Crew McChesney singled to center and stole second, then Robinson followed with his third double of the game to bring him home. 

A three-run seventh inning gave the Cougars a comfortable 9-1 lead. Gambill led off with a single to center and Parker Goff reached by being hit by a pitch. Keoni Painter followed with a single to third, bringing home Gambill, and McChesney then ripped a double to left-center, driving in both Painter and Goff for the eight run lead.

UVU rallied in the eighth, scoring two runs on a double, while taking advantage of a hit-by-pitch and two walks.

Brayden Marx closed out the ninth inning with a flyout, groundout and strikeout for the 9-3 win.
