Office of Student Success and Inclusion (OSSI)
BYU Athletics works closely with BYU’s Office of Student Success and Inclusion (ASB C-374), who support students from diverse backgrounds including those with different sexual and gender identities. For more information please reach out to Marissa Gilson (801-422-0556 or marissa_gilson@byu.edu).
The Office of Student Success and Inclusion (OSSI) sponsors and promotes programs that give students opportunities to be more proximate to diverse ideas and perspectives, as well as events specifically for diverse populations including international students, racial and ethnic minorities, first-generation college students, sexual and gender minorities, students with disabilities and religious minorities.
Whitney Johnson, Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development, Diversity & Inclusion, 331 SAB, whitney_johnson@byu.edu, serves as training coordinator and, in partnership with BYU’s Office of Student Success and Inclusion (ASB C-374), offers ongoing training for student-athletes, coaches and athletic staff.
NCAA Common Ground Initiative
BYU Athletics is proud to be a part of the NCAA Common Ground Initiative, which aims to establish inclusive and respectful athletics environments for participants of all sexual orientations, gender identities and religious beliefs. The main goal of Common Ground is to foster environments in athletics that respect dignity and support the well-being of student-athletes and those who teach and lead them. Liz Darger, Sr. Associate AD/SWA, serves on the NCAA Common Ground Leadership Team.
BYU became the first private, faith-based Division I institution to host a Common Ground event when it hosted Common Ground IV in November 2018. Learn more about NCAA Common Ground.
University Chaplain
The University Chaplain, Jim Slaughter, meets with student-athletes who are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He can complete ecclesiastical endorsements for student-athletes who are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and help provide or connect students to university resources.
