PROVO, Utah — BYU softball beat Fresno State behind four home runs in a Monday matinee contest at Gail Miller Field, 7-4.

The Cougars (26-12, 8-7 Big 12) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, hitting two homers in the frame to break a 4-4 tie and retake the lead.

Satrting pitcher Kate Dahle set a new career-high with nine strikeouts in her 5.2 innings of work. The Cougars also held the edge on offense as they out-hit the Bulldogs, 10 to four.

Hosting its first kid's game in program history, BYU welcomed students from local schools to the game, accumulating an attendance record of 2,059.

Player Highlights

BYU jumped out to an early lead with a homer from Hailey Morrow in the first. Dahle racked up four of her nine strikeouts in the first two innings, while Fresno State was held hitless. 

In the third inning, the Bulldogs got their first hit and with it their first run. However, the Cougars responded quickly as Ilove'a Brittingham homered with Morrow on base to push the lead to 4-1.

Fresno State was able to ride its momentum from its third-inning run, scoring three more in the fourth to tie the game at four, backed by a BYU error.

The scoring was stifled on both sides for the next two innings, leaving the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth.

Lindy Milkowski then stepped up to the plate and blasted a solo shot to right field over the scoreboard to give the Cougars a 5-4 advantage. They kept it rolling in the with their fourth home run of the day from Maddie Udall-Woolley, who brought Abbey Gillespie in to score and increase the lead to three at 7-4.

The Cougars took care of business in the top of the ninth, ending the game at 7-4 to pick up the midweek contest win.

BYU will return to Gail Miller Field for a three-game series against Utah beginning on Thursday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m. MDT. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
