TEMPE, Ariz. — BYU softball took Arizona State to extra innings before ultimately falling in the series finale, 6-5 at Farrington Softball Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

A two-run homer in the seventh by Lily Owens gave the Cougars (15-6, 1-2 Big 12) their first lead of the game, but the Sun Devils responded with a home run of their own to push the game into extras, where BYU ultimately came up short, dropping their season-opening Big 12 series.

Out-hit by ASU, 10-5, the Cougars also had three errors in the contest.

Player Highlights

BYU plated a run in the first as Owens drew a leadoff full-count walk, moving to second on a passed ball. Ilove’a Brittingham singled into right a batter later, scoring Owens for a 1-0 lead.

Arizona State quickly responded in its half of the inning, drawing a leadoff walk of their own before a homer to right center, making it 2-1, Sun Devils.

ASU added another in the second during an inning in which the Cougars had two errors. The Sun Devils loaded the bases and plated a run on a wild pitch, gaining a 3-1 advantage.

BYU got a run back in the third with Lauren Flanders singling to the pitcher and Hailey Morrow doubling to left center, drawing within one at 3-2.

The Cougars skated around some trouble in the bottom of the sixth, striking out the side after Arizona State put two in scoring position on a pair of singles and a BYU error, keeping the Sun Devil lead at one.

BYU took the lead in the top of the seventh on a walk, fielder’s choice and hammered home run to center field by Owens, putting the Cougars in front, 5-4.

ASU answered right back, however, hitting a solo home run in the home half of the seventh, to tie the game back up, eventually sending it to extras.

BYU had a chance to score in the eighth, putting two runners in scoring position, but a fly out ended the attack.

The Sun Devils took advantage, leading off with a double to left center before a sacrifice bunt, single and ground out. ASU’s runner took off for home on the ground out and was originally called out for an inning-ending double play. The play was overturned after replay review, however, granting Arizona State the walk-off, winning run.

The Cougars have a Big 12 bye week and will play a single game at Utah Tech on Tuesday, Mar. 11 at 4 p.m. MDT. The game will be streamed on WAC International.
