PROVO, Utah — No. 6 BYU men's volleyball was defeated in five sets (25-23, 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 21-23) to No. 5 USC Friday night in the Smith Fieldhouse.

"It was both a brutal and exciting match," said BYU head coach Shawn Olmstead. "I wish the ball would've fallen the other way a few times down the stretch. We were in it, but I thought throughout the night we gave away too many easy opportunities. USC capitalized off of those mistakes, and they were better. I am proud of our team for not giving up in the fourth set, but there were just too many easy missed touches. In set five you cannot do that, with us coming out leading 6-1, letting USC get right back in to it."

Keoni Thiim led BYU with 22 kills on a .326 hitting percentage. The senior also added a season-high six services aces to tie for the sixth-most by an individual in BYU men's volleyball single-game history.

Luke Benson added 15 kills, a season-high 10 blocks and two assists. Niko Hales chipped in nine kills and a season-high 10 blocks while Teilon-Jonathan Tufuga added eight kills and three service aces.

The Cougars recorded 13 aces to tie for the third most all-time in BYU men's volleyball single-game history, holding USC to just two aces.
