UC Santa Barbara women’s swimming has won six of seven dual meets on the season with a 104-97 loss to UNLV its only blemish. The Gauchos have defeated Cal Poly, Pepperdine, UC San Diego, Cal State Bakersfield, Hawaii and Cal Baptist.

LAST TIME OUT

Despite a 217-131 loss to Arizona Dec. 20-21 in Tucson, BYU women’s swimming earned two more weekly Big 12 honors with Mackenzie Miller Lung and Lucy Warnick cited for their performances.

In the Cougars’ dual meet versus the Wildcats, Miller Lung won her seventh race of the season with a 2:10.17 finish in the 200 breast. Miller Lung’s win came with three seconds’ separation from runner-up Eleni Gewalt of Arizona. The dual meet in Tucson also saw Miller Lung finish second in the 100 breast at 1:00.78 and help BYU’s 200 and 400 medley relay squads to top-5 finishes.

The junior from Clovis, California has now secured Big 12 Women’s Swimmer of the Week twice this season.

Warnick earned her first Big 12 citation with two top-3 finishes in Tucson. The freshman from Las Vegas, Nevada won the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:21.73 and took second in the 200 IM at 2:02.83. Warnick’s 400 IM win came over four seconds in front of the Wildcats’ Joy Felner. Warnick, a 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier, also anchored the Cougars’ 400 free relay squad to a fourth-place finish at 3:27.89.

BYU men’s swimming suffered a 240-107 setback to Arizona but its young talent was again recognized with Nathaniel Eliason earning the Cougars’ second Big 12 Men’s Newcomer of the Week award this season.

Eliason’s first Big 12 honor follows a meet in which he starred in three relays and two individual events for BYU. Eliason finished second and third, respectively, in the 50 free and 100 fly. The freshman from Mechanicsville, Virginia swam anchor in the 200 and 400 medley relays, helping both to third-place finishes. In his fifth event of the meet, Eliason helped the 200 free relay team to a third-place finish as well.

RANKINGS REVIEW

BYU men’s swim and dive received just one vote in the CSCAA’s December Top 25, coming in behind Big 12 counterpart Arizona’s two votes. Arizona State remained the league’s only ranked team in both men’s and women’s polls. The Sun Devils stand at No. 3 in the men’s and No. 14 in the women’s.

BYU brings the only nationally ranked divers into the weekend’s Utah Dive Invite. The Cougars’ Chase Hindmarsh ranks 29th in the nation and second in the Big 12 in 3-meter scoring with a season-best 344.55. Marti Llop is 31st nationally and third in the Big 12 with a season-best 1-meter score of 320.85.

Alexia Jackson Hansen leads BYU women’s divers with her No. 30 national spot in the 3m at 306 points. Jackson Hansen also ranked third and sixth in the Big 12 in 3 and 1m, respectively.

BYU swimming’s lone nationally-ranked performer continues to be Miller Lung at 24th in the women’s 200 breast (2:09.61). The Cougars’ men’s 200 medley and 400 free relay squads also hold top-50 positions nationally.
