TEMPE, Ariz. – BYU men’s tennis had two doubles pairings represented in the latest rankings. Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs were ranked No. 32 and TJ Wells and Otto Schreiner were No. 113.
Thayne and Fuchs began the fall season at No. 11 in the country. They finished fall play at 6-3. They played four ranked matches throughout the fall and were 3-1 in those matches. The pairing beat No. 10 Washington, No. 13 California at Berkeley and No. 56 Middle Tennessee within those three wins. Their lone ranked loss came against No. 20 LSU.
Wells and Schreiner were very successful as a pairing as they went 7-1 throughout their fall season. The pair was undefeated as a doubles team at the Dar Walters Classic going 4-0. They then made a run to the semifinals of the Bedford Cup and were handed their first loss of the season. Those were the only two fall tournaments the pair competed in as a team.
This is the first time since the 2018-19 season that the Cougars will have two ranked pairings on their team. In 2019 the team had Sean Hill/Jeffrey Hsu at No. 55 and Sam Tullis/Ben Gajardo at No. 84. The Cougars will next compete in January when they begin their spring season.
