PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s volleyball released its 2025 schedule Tuesday morning, featuring 16 home games in the Smith Fieldhouse.

The Cougars’ 28-game schedule includes 12 conference games, in a two-game series, with six out of the eight teams in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. This season, newly added Menlo College and Vanguard University will officially compete as members of the conference. Both schools were previously announced to join the conference by the MPSF during the summer of 2023, to eventually join in 2025. BYU men’s volleyball remains in the MPSF after a 30+ year partnership, dating back to 1993.

Following the regular season, the 2025 MPSF Tournament will be hosted by Pepperdine in Malibu, California from April 23-26. The 2025 NCAA Tournament will then be hosted in Columbus, Ohio from May 10-12 in Ohio State's Covelli Center.

Strength of Schedule

BYU will host the two-time national champions when Hawaii comes to Provo for the first time since 2019, with matchups on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 in the Smith Fieldhouse. BYU and Hawaii’s most recent matchup occurred in 2021 when the Cougars fell 3-0 to the Rainbow Warriors in the National Championship title match in Ohio.

The Cougars will also face St. Thomas Aquinas for the first time in program history in January for BYU’s home opener. In April 2024, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Volleyball team claimed its first-ever East Coast Conference Tournament Championship, surviving a five-set thriller to take a 3-2 victory over Dominican University.

BYU will also face four teams on the road who reached the 2024 NCAA Tournament: UCLA, Ohio State, GCU and UC Irvine. Last season, all of BYU’s five losses at home were against teams that reached the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

"It's not a walk in the park," said BYU head coach Shawn Olmstead. "I really believe this is one of the tougher schedules in men's volleyball. I think our schedule is going to be tougher than most. It's important that I put our guys in a position where we as a team are playing our best volleyball at the end of the season. I want to be tested on the road. I like it. We put ourselves in a position to see what we are made of."

The Cougars in 2024

In 2024, BYU men’s volleyball achieved a 16-9 overall record, including a home win against the eventual national champions of UCLA on Feb. 23. BYU finished with 1,197 kills, 1,128 assists, 137 aces, 798 digs and 199 blocks in 2024. The Cougars outhit their opponents, with a .300 hitting percentage compared to a combined .265 clip.

BYU’s 18-game home win streak was snapped after a 3-1 loss to No. 7 UC Irvine in January. The streak, spanning from January 6, 2023 to January 25, 2024, is the second-most consecutive wins in the Smith Fieldhouse in the BYU men's volleyball rally scoring era.

2025 Team Preview

The Cougars bring back outside hitters Miks Ramanis and Luke Benson who were both named All-American honorable mention by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as part of its 2024 awards. Benson was also named to the 2024 All-MPSF First Team, with Ramanis named to the All-MPSF Second Team.

"I would hope our biggest step forward this year would be some good depth", said Olmstead. "I like our depth across the board. I believe that it's a lot better and deeper than in year's past from top to bottom."

On the defensive side, senior middle blocker Teon Taylor returns as a 2024 All-MPSF honorable mention. Taylor led the team in blocks per set during the 2024 campaign, with an average of 0.80 blocks per set. He totaled 73 blocks and a team-high of eight solo blocks.

BYU welcomes Hawaii transfer Keoni Thiim, who played for the Rainbow Warriors from 2022-2024, totaling 189 kills, 144 digs, 71 aces and 35 total blocks. In the 2024 season, Thiim appeared in all 30 of Hawaii’s matches, with 14 starts at outside hitter. He recorded at least one ace in 20 matches, totaling 40, and earned a career-high 20 kills against Long Beach State on March 16.
