"This is a really fun meet for the distance guys because they're trying to capitalize off of cross country fitness," said assistant distance coach Ryan Waite. "But it's also a meet that you have to be careful with. It can kind of turn into fool's gold, if not everything is clicking right after a long cross country season or a long fall build, if you're feeling a little off, then it's not the best meet to go to. It's because you're chasing something that maybe you're reaching for. We just have to be really smart about who we take and how we approach it, but with the guys that we have going, we think that they're ready to go, ready to crush a fast time, and hopefully capitalize on that cross country fitness."
The Cougars will look to take the momentum from the recent NCAA Cross Country Championship team win just a few weeks prior to the first meet of the indoor track and field season. Six athletes are set to compete, four of which ran for the cross country title in Wisconsin. James Corrigan, Joey Nokes and Lucas Bons are all entered in the men's 5k. Creed Thompson, another member of the championship team is also set to compete.
Carter Cutting and Hayden Gray from the middle-distance position group will compete in the men's mile. Cutting ran at the U20 World Championships in Lima, Peru last summer where he placed fifth overall in the final of the men's 1500-meter.
"I’m really proud of the group's consistency these last couple months," said Cutting. "We’re all really inspired by what the guys did at the cross country championships, and the goal is to ride that wave of momentum into the indoor track and field season. We’re all super focused and motivated for the upcoming meets and peaking at conference and nationals.”
