PROVO, Utah — In their final home game of the season, the BYU women's soccer team shut out Houston 3-0, with a season high in shots and shots on goal.
"We've had some ups and downs this season," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We didn't do what we needed to in our last game, so it's great to go off South Field with a complete 90 minutes and a great result on senior night."
BYU's Lytiana Akinaka, Savannah Hansen and Mia Curry all had season-high shots during tonight's matchup, with two, one and two respectively.
In tonight's Big 12 matchup, true freshman and 17-year old Lucy Kesler scored her first collegiate goal.
BYU's leading goal-scorer Allie Fryer tallied her ninth goal of the season, while center back Avery Frischknecht added her third of the year.
Tonight's game marked Addie Gardner's first-ever multi-assist game with two assists. Sierra Pennock added her third assist of the season.
BYU's shutout featured a season-high 29 shots and season-high 16 shots on goal. The team also tied its season high of three goals.
With 29 shots on the night, BYU forced Houston goalkeeper Maggie Manning to make a career-high 13 saves.
First Half
BYU held an early possession of the ball, with a shot in the fourth minute by Allie Fryer, followed by two corners in the 12th and 13th minutes.
In the 14th minute, Fryer scored off an assist from Addie Gardner, and BYU took the lead 1-0.
Mackenzee Vance took a shot in the 20th minute, which ricocheted off the left goal post. After two more shots by Vance, Kesler scored her first career goal in the 32nd minute, assisted by Gardner, putting BYU up 2-0.
Senior Lytiana Akinaka sent ball into the back of the net in the 37th minute, but the goal was called offside.
Houston made a shot attempt in the last few seconds of the half, but BYU held onto its two-goal lead heading into the locker room.
BYU ended the half with 15 shots, 10 on goal, three saves and four corner kicks.
Second Half
After a slow few minutes of back-and-forth play, Frischkneckt scored a header goal off a corner kick by Pennock.
The BYU Cougars held possession of the ball for most of the second half, keeping play on their offensive half of the field.
In the 81st minute, Gardner ricocheted a shot off the crossbar, and Stringfellow followed up with a goal that was called offside.
Gardner and Akinaka combined for three shots in the 82nd minute off a corner by Gardner, but the score remained 3-0.
Houston managed to bring the ball to its offensive half in the final minute of the game, but BYU held a strong defensive line and won the match 3-0.
In the second half, BYU tallied 14 shots, six on goal, two saves and six corners.
Next up, the BYU Cougars will travel to Texas to face Texas Tech on Oct. 25 in their last regular season match. The game will be streamed at 6 p.m. MDT on ESPN+.
