IRVING, Texas — Eleven BYU baseball players were recognized on the 2024 Spring Academic All-Big 12 Team, the league announced on Tuesday.
Nine of the Cougars’ 11 honorees received First Team academic all-conference status in recognition of cumulative GPAs of 3.20 or higher.
The Big 12 academic all-conference teams are comprised of those athletes who maintain a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA while participating in 20 percent of scheduled contests on the season. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award.

BYU’s pitching staff garnered seven of the team’s 11 conference academic honors.
Sophomore pitcher Ben Hansen led BYU in strikeouts (51), innings pitched (72) and wins (5) while achieving a 3.77 GPA as a pre-business major. Payton Gubler worked his way into the Cougars’ weekend rotation over the course of the season and became the game-one starter in each of the team’s last three series. Gubler recorded 32 strikeouts in 29.1 innings pitched and finished the academic year with a pre-business GPA of 3.70.
Both Hansen and Gubler were also honored by College Sports Communicators with a spot on their Academic All-District Team on June 4.
Senior reliever Boston Mabeus appeared in each of BYU’s last 13 games on his way to finishing the regular season ranked third in the Big 12 with 28 total appearances. Mabeus finished fifth on the team with 44 strikeouts while posting a 3.47 GPA as a communications major.
Despite missing the season’s last 18 games with an injury, senior lefty Mason Olson earned Honorable Mention All-Big 12 with a team-leading 2.82 ERA. Olson, a pre-business major, ranked top-4 in the league in both ERA and fewest earned runs allowed prior to his injury.
Luke Sterner, Carter Foss and Cutter Clawson rounded out the Cougars’ all-academic pitchers.
Sterner and Foss both major in political science with Sterner pitching 22.2 innings in 17 appearances with three starts. Foss took the mound in 19.1 innings and collected 22 strikeouts. Clawson, a sophomore pre-business major, started seven games with 19 appearances overall for 40 innings pitched.
Position players Parker Goff, Luke Anderson, Bitner Workman and Tate Gambill each garnered academic honors as well.
Goff, a sophomore catcher, played in 33 games with 24 starts and finished the season second on the team in both batting average (.293) and on-base percentage (.403). The exercise and wellness major also achieved a 3.53 GPA in the classroom. Anderson, a sophomore outfielder, led BYU in doubles (12), walks (32) and stolen bases (9-10) while finishing second on the team with 36 runs scored.
A pre-business major from Queen Creek, Arizona, Workman scored two runs on the season with 10 games played in his return to baseball following a two-year full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Colorado Springs, Colorado. While Gambill missed the season with an injury, the finance major and outfielder still qualified for the honor as a senior with a 3.80 GPA.
BYU completed the 2023-24 athletic year with 197 total academic all-conference honorees, 193 of which were awarded by the Big 12. Women’s track and field (27), women’s swim and dive (24) and football (23) led all sports in academic recognitions. After 57 and 58 Big 12 honorees in Fall and Winter, respectively, the Cougars’ Spring all-academic teams totaled 78 athletes.
Bella Folino of women’s soccer, Eliza Millar-Crossman of women’s gymnastics and Chloe Temples of softball earned the Cougars' most prestigious individual academic accolades in 2023-24. Folino was recognized with the NCAA’s Elite 90 Award at the College Cup while Millar-Crossman and Temples claimed Big 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year awards in their respective sports.
