BYU Finishes No. 1 in ITA Mountain Region, Huang Ranked Top Singles Player Alongside Multiple Ranked Cougars

BYU women's tennis wrapped up the 2023-24 season ranked No. 1 in the ITA Mountain Regional Rankings after a successful 17-8 year. The last time the Cougars finished atop the Mountain Region was in 2007, when BYU won 22 matches.

PROVO, Utah — BYU women's tennis wrapped up the 2023-24 season ranked No. 1 in the ITA Mountain Regional Rankings after a successful 17-8 year. The last time the Cougars finished atop the Mountain Region was in 2007, when BYU won 22 matches.

Bobo Huang, Tina Li, and Kendall Kovick were ranked in the singles regional rankings, and the pairings of Emilee Astle/Kovick and Kaavya Sawhney/Huang finished ranked in the doubles rankings. Huang was also named the ITA Mountain Region Most Improved Player.

Singles

Huang was ranked as the top singles player in the region after amassing 16 singles victories this season, a new career high. She was also recognized as a 2024 Big 12 Co-Champion of the No. 1 singles position and was named to the 2024 Big 12 Second Team Singles list this season. Huang also finished the year first in singles victories and second in doubles wins on the team, with three ranked singles victories this year. The junior played every singles match in the No. 1 position and has increased her win totals in singles and doubles every season at BYU. On Jan. 9, she was named Big 12 Player of the Week, and in the fall, she was a 2023 ITA All-American participant and a 2023 ITA Fall Championships selection.

Tina Li was ranked as the No. 9 singles player in the region after a strong season in which she recorded 11 singles victories and 12 doubles wins. Li mainly played in the No. 2 singles position this year and was fourth on the team in doubles victories. She was also named to the 2024 CSC Academic All-District team, and her 12 doubles wins were a career high.

Kendall Kovick was ranked No. 17 in the region in singles in her first season with the Cougars. Kovick secured 11 singles wins and nine doubles victories during her junior season. She tied for second on the team in singles wins and primarily played in the No. 3 position. Kovick also recorded two ranked singles victories this season.

Doubles

Emilee Astle and Kendall Kovick were ranked as the top doubles duo in the region after a successful season in which they defeated the No. 5-ranked doubles team in the nation, Oklahoma State, 6-2 on March 9. The pair was named to the 2024 Big 12 Second Team Doubles list and also finished the year ranked No. 49 in the nation, recording eight wins together this season.

Kaavya Sawhney and Huang were ranked as the No. 6 doubles tandem in the region after a dominant season in which they secured 16 doubles victories, leading the team.
