AUSTIN, Texas – BYU men’s golf sits in fourth place following a 5-under-par 278 in the NCAA Austin Regional opening round, played at The University of Texas Golf Club on Monday.

“All around our guys looked solid today,” BYU director of golf Todd Miller said. “This is a tough golf course and they played patient, smart golf. If we can do the same thing over the next two days, I think we’ll be happy about where we sit when the tournament finishes."

Freshman Peter Kim carded six birdies en route to a 3-under-par 68 to sit in a tie for seventh, just one shot behind the leaders. Zac Jones is just one shot behind Kim and tied for 10th after making two birdies and an eagle to card a 2-under round of 69.

Zac's younger brother Cooper Jones sits in a tie for 18th at 1-under-par after carding three birdies and two bogeys. Max Brenchley is tied for 32nd at 1-over-par with Keanu Akina rounding out the scoring for the Cougars in a tie for 60th at 5-over.

The tournament experienced a lightning delay in the middle of the first round, delaying play for nearly three hours before play resumed.

“The golf course played very consistent and fair,” Z. Jones said. “It’s a challenging course but I think it is set up very well for our team. The lightning delay was annoying, but we’ve worked as a team this year to try and be mentally tougher than everyone else and look for positives. I think we went back out refreshed and ready to get back after it. We are in a great spot, but our goal is to just keep playing well and keep our heads down.”

The Cougars will be back in action in the second round with tee times beginning at 8 am CDT. BYU will tee it up with Georgia and Utah in round two with live scoring available at GolfStat.com
