SAN DIEGO - Dallin Shurts improved on his BYU No. 6 all-time mark as he threw the discus 63.26-meters/207-6 as teammate Danny Bryant put his name on the No. 8 spot in the shot put, throwing 19.42m/63-8.75.
Shurts earned a long-awaited personal best in the discus after throwing almost a meter further than his previous best of 62.32m/204-5 achieved at the 2022 USATF Championships. His throw of 63.26-meters/207-6 today placed third among a loaded field of competition, behind only New Zealand national record-holder Connor Bell and Olympian Reggie Jagers.
“I mostly just focused on my cues today,” said Shurts. “The energy and power was there for me. The rest of it was figuring out how to fly. It’s all about focusing on what you can control. My big thing today was, ‘If I do these three cues, I know I’ll throw far.’ Also, it was fun that I brought my speaker to blast some rock music while we threw."
Bryant's personal best was enough to place second in the men's elite shot put division, only behind Sweden's Wictor Petersson. He also threw over 19 meters for the first time of his career.
“I am really happy with today,” said Bryant. “I’ve been waiting a while to break that 19-meter barrier. I’m glad that I was able to do it today with some good competition and some good weather.”
