FORT WORTH — A two-match road trip started with a 5-0 loss for BYU men’s tennis to No. 3 TCU Thursday night at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. Despite a team doubles point loss, Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs picked up a 6-4 win together.
Doubles
1. Zach Fuchs/Wally Thayne (BYU) def. Jack Pinnington/Pedro Vives (TCU) 6-4
2. No. 70 Duncan Chan/Lui Maxted (TCU) def. Jack Barnett/Redd Owen (BYU) 6-2
3. Tomas Jirousek/Kaj Quirijns (TCU) def. Tygen Goldammer/TJ Wells (BYU) 6-3

TCU got off to a strong start at No. 2 doubles, taking a 5-1 lead. With Redd Owen serving, he and Jack Barnett then held serve to win the next game before TCU also held serve to take the match 6-2.
Thayne and Fuchs held serve the entire way on court one before notching a deciding break while up 5-4 to claim the match. With the score at 1-1 and Thayne serving, the duo didn’t lose a point in the game. Tied at 2-2 and 30-30, Fuchs drilled back-to-back aces to win the game. The duo went on to win the match point after holding a 40-30 lead.
No. 3 doubles finished up last as TCU’s Jirousek and Quirijns won the final three games over Tygen Goldammer and TJ Wells. With the score at 3-3, the Cougars led 40-30 before dropping a pair of break point opportunities. TCU then earned a break of its own before holding serve on a deciding deuce point.

The Horned Frogs extended their lead at No. 3 singles, where Fuchs fell in straight sets to No. 72 Lui Maxted. Down 1-4, the junior earned a break on a deuce point that saw a baseline rally before Maxted returned the ball wide. Maxted then earned a break back and won 6-2. Maxted started with a 4-2 lead in set two before Fuchs narrowed the deficit to 5-4, which then gave way to a 6-4 loss.
No. 2 singles saw Thayne fall behind 0-4 in set one before holding serve in a game where No. 57 Pedro Vives never scored, which included a backhand drop shot winner from center court. Vives then secured the first set 6-2. The junior bounced back for a 2-0 set two lead before losing on deuce point. Tied 3-3 and up 40-30, Thayne drilled an ace near the outer line to go up 4-3. He later went up 5-4 before Vives won three straight for a 7-5 outcome.
TCU then clinched the dual match on court five, where Goldammer and Chan were locked at 3-3 before Chan won the final three games, including two breaks. Goldammer fell behind 2-4 in the second set. With the score at 40-40, Chan hit a tough serve that went unreturned. Goldammer held serve before the match finished at 3-6.
No. 1 singles finished shortly after. Facing No. 7 Jack Pinnington, No. 123 Barnett went up 2-0 early. Pinnington responded to make it 2-2 and the senior then held serve as the return sailed long to put Barnett up 3-2. Pinnington won four of the next five games to take set one 6-4. With the second set score at 1-1, a deuce point went TCU’s way on Barnett’s serve, beginning a run as the match finished at 6-1 for Pinnington.
Owen fell in set one at No. 4 singles 6-4 after a late push narrowed the gap. The junior trailed 2-5 before holding serve, earning a break, and then serving for the tie before hitting it wide while down 30-40. The match ended at 2-3 for opponent Tomas Jirousek when the stoppage came.
David Duong’s match on court six also went unfinished. The freshman kept things even throughout set one. With the score at 4-5 and Duong serving, a deuce point ended in TCU’s favor after his opponent hit a pivotal drop shot. Duong was behind 3-4 when the match went unfinished.
