Whiting adds transfer Marya Hudgins to 2024-25 roster

PROVO, Utah — BYU women's basketball coach Amber Whiting has announced the addition of Marya Hudgins to the 2024-25 roster. Hudgins comes to BYU after playing the first two years of her collegiate career at Santa Clara where she appeared in 63 games, starting 13 during her freshman and sophomore seasons.

"Marya [Hudgins] is a two-way, competitive player who wants to win," said Whiting "She is a scoring threat on offense and a menace on the defensive end. Her length and athleticism will help us on the perimeter. She is a great perimeter shooter but can also take defenders off the bounce and has an incredibly high ceiling. She and I connected instantly and she will be a great fit for the team and culture we are building at BYU."

The incoming junior scored 7.6 points per game on 39 percent shooting from the field and a 33.3 percent clip from three over two seasons with the Broncos. Hudgins also pulled down 5.1 rebounds, dished 0.9 assists and recorded nearly a steal per game. The former Bronco played in two games against BYU during the 2022-23 season in which she averaged 8.0 points and 4.5 rebounds while also recording an assist, a block and a steal.

The Aurora, Colorado native scored a career-high 18 points in a 70-58 win over Saint Mary's on Feb. 10, 2024. Hudgins went 7-of-10 from the floor and hit 4-of-5 offerings from three while also recording four rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Hudgins recorded two double-doubles last season with 14 points and 11 rebounds in a win over CSUN and 13 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Lincoln. 

The newest BYU Cougar is the oldest of four siblings and comes from a rich pedigree of college athletes. Her father Drake played basketball at Seattle Pacific University from 1996-2000 while her mother was a track athlete for Mount Hood Community College from 1996-98. Her grandfather also suited up in college, playing football for Mt. San Antonio College from 1968-69.
