Keller and Clement launch personal bests in the javelin

Alysa Keller earned BYU's No. 5 all-time mark in the women's javelin as Chase Clement threw for the program's No. 10 all-time mark in the men's javelin Friday in Long Beach.

Long Beach, Calif - Alysa Keller earned BYU's No. 5 all-time mark in the women's javelin as Chase Clement threw for the program's No. 10 all-time mark in the men's javelin Friday at the Beach Invitational.

Women's Recap

Keller threw 51.53-meters/169-0 in her first meet representing BYU. The freshman from Billings, Montana and the 2023 Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year from the state of Montana placed sixth overall in the competition. 

"Coming into this meet, I was a little bit nervous because I was opening up pretty late into the season due to an injury," said Keller. "But I knew I was ready and what I was capable of becuase of the work that I have put in the last year. I am really proud of the outcome."

Libby Parkinson threw 49.69m/163-0, just under a meter and a half off of her personal best to place ninth overall in the competition.

In the women's hammer throw, Lia Katoa had another solid competition ending with a throw of 56.60m/185-8.

Men's Recap

Michael Whittaker recorded a season-best throw of 67.25m/220-7 to led the Cougar men in the javelin and place eighth overall in the competition.

Chase Clement earned his spot on BYU's record board claiming the No. 10 spot with his throw of 66.58m/218-5 to place 11th in the competition.

"I was just focusing on my breathing and staying relaxed," said Clement. "I am happy with my performance today."
