PROVO, Utah — BYU baseball lost game one of a three-game Big 12 series to Kansas, 11-1, on Thursday at Miller Park in Provo. 

Kansas (13-10, 5-5) put up 11 runs on 14 hits, while BYU (11-12, 4-6) had six hits, including a solo home run by Bryker Hurdsman for the Cougars only run.

The Jayhawks scored first in the top of the first inning with four runs on three hits, including a two-run home run by Jake English who entered the game tied for fourth in the Big 12 in home runs.

After a scoreless second inning, Kansas extended its lead in the third with one run on back-to-back doubles for a 5-0 advantage.

BYU got on the board with a leadoff home run by right fielder Hurdsman in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Kansas lead to 5-1.

The Jayhawks answered with one run in the top of the fifth, two more in the sixth, one in the eighth and two in the ninth for a final score of 11-1.

Reese Dutton got the win for Kansas, his sixth-straight in as many starts to improve to 6-1 on the year.

Due to inclement weather expected in the Provo area on Saturday, games two and three of the conference series will be played on Friday beginning at 12:30 p.m. MT at Miller Park. Both games of the doubleheader will air live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and also broadcast on BYU Radio App, BYUradio.org and 107.9 FM in the local market.
