PROVO, Utah - BYU men’s tennis is set to travel east, facing off with North Carolina Central and Radford on Thursday and Friday for the Cougars’ first all-time matches against both schools.
BYU rides a seven-match winning streak and holds an 8-3 record, not having dropped a match since Jan. 26 at UC Irvine. The streak marks the longest since another seven-match winning stretch in 2021. The Cougars went 2-0 last week with wins at Weber State and over Idaho State at home.
The last time the Cougars competed in an East Coast state was a neutral site contest in Boston, Massachusetts on Jan. 25, 2020 against No. 39 Minnesota.

Where Things Stand
At No. 2 and No. 4 singles, Wally Thayne and Redd Owen each hold team-leading 8-2 records. After dropping a match vs. Nevada on Feb. 16, Owen responded with two dominant wins last week.
At the No. 1 spot, Jack Barnett stands at 7-2 in singles. The senior has won five straight and earned victories in straight sets during both singles matches last week. Freshman David Duong joins Barnett with only two losses, holding a 5-2 record at No. 6 singles.
Zach Fuchs and Tygen Goldammer hold the longest singles winning streaks with six in a row at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Both are 7-3 this year.
After losing the doubles point at Weber State on Thursday, the Cougars bounced back against Idaho State with wins from Barnett and Owen along with Goldammer and Wells. Barnett and Owen are winners of five straight for a 7-2 record this season. Fuchs and Thayne are also 5-2.
North Carolina Central Notes
- 2023-24 record: 3-6
- The Eagles went 8-16 last season with a 3rd-place finish (3-2) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
- NCCU is led by D. Curtis Lawson, who is in his 24th season as the Eagles’ head coach. He also serves as an Associate Athletic Director.
- Five of eight roster members return from last year, including All-MEAC Second Team Singles honoree Kareem Abdul Hakin.
- Thursday’s match marks just NCCU’s second home match on the year.
Radford Notes
- 2023-24 record: 0-6
- The Highlanders went 9-10 last year, placing fourth in the Big South standings (2-3).
- Radford head coach J.D. Shade is in his second season, holding a 9-16 record.
- The Highlanders’ most recent NCAA tournament appearance came just two years ago in 2022, with a 4-0 loss to No. 9 Wake Forest in the opening round of 64. Radford also won the Big South Tournament championship prior to the NCAA showing.
- Five of eight roster members return from last season.
