LIHUʻE, Kauaʻi – BYU men’s golf is headed to the Aloha State to defend its title in the 47th edition of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course at Hōkūala.
Last February, the Cougars broke the tournament scoring record, as well as shattered the school 54-hole record, finsihing at 54-under with rounds of 273-271-266—810.
“It’s exciting to come back to Kauai and try to defend at the John Burns,” BYU director of golf Todd Miller said. “It was an incredible performance out of our guys last year. This team is relentless in their practice and are dedicated to preparing for each event. As a coach, it’s a great feeling to have players who are so passionate!”
The Cougar squad will consist of Zac Jones, Max Brenchley, Keanu Akina, Peter Kim and Cooper Jones, with Brock Goyen playing individually.
“The guys were hitting great shots even in the difficult rainy conditions last year,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “Every time you looked at a different player, it seemed like they were making another putt. When that happens, it’s really fun for players and coaches. This team loves to compete, so we are looking forward to Hōkūala.”
This year’s three-day tournament will feature a field of 20 teams, including three teams ranked in the top 20; No. 9 Arizona, No. 16 New Mexico and No. 20 Cal.
The Cougars will tee off in a shotgun start at 8:30 HST tomorrow. Live scoring can be found at SmartGolf.
