SEATTLE — Meghan Hunter and Sebastian Fernandez each podiumed in their respective 800-meter races for the BYU track and field program on day two of the Husky Classic.
Men's Recap
Fernandez clocked a 1:48.73 in the 800m race, placing third overall. The junior's performance fell just a second shy of his personal record of 1:47.63, a time that is No. 3 all-time on the program top-10 board. Freshman newcomer Carter Cutting placed seventh overall and first in his heat with a time of 1:50.58. Lucas Bons finished right behind Cutting, crossing the finish at 1:50.69 to land in eighth.
"It was good to go in a great heat and just race it," said Fernandez. "Overall, it was just very fun and good to see how fast I could be today. It was also fun to hear all my teammates yelling encouragement at me throughout the race."
Wyatt Haughton ran 4:00.88 in the mile to take seventh overall and first in his heat. The freshman achieved a new personal record in the event, having previously run a 4:02.78 just two weeks prior at the John Thomas Terrier Classic.
"We had some great racing by the mid-distance men today," said assistant men's distance coach Ryan Waite. "Wyatt got really close to the four-minute barrier in the mile, and our 800m runners all competed for wins in their respective heats. I think the day set us up really well for the distance medley relays next week and Big 12 Championships the week after."
