PROVO, UT – No. 3 BYU men’s cross country will compete at the 2023 Division I Men's Cross Country NCAA Mountain Regional at the Chaparral Ridge Cross Country Course in Lubbock, Texas Friday morning.

BYU will approach the starting line having come off a second-place team finish at the Big 12 Conference Championships on Oct. 28. There, the Cougars had three athletes place within the top-15 to earn spots on the Big 12 All-Conference team. All-American Creed Thompson finished third overall, with teammate Joey Nokes in fifth place. Freshman James Corrigan placed 13th. BYU finished with 55 total points, trailing No. 2 Oklahoma State, who accrued 25 points as all five scorers placed within the top ten.
The Cougars have claimed five regional titles and have had four individual champions in program history. BYU most recently took the trophy in 2021 with 42 points when the Cougars hosted the competition at the Timpanogos Golf Course in Provo. Conner Mantz led the way, crossing the line at first overall with a time of 29:39.6.
The top competition for the Cougars will be No. 1 Northern Arizona, who recently won the Big Sky Conference Championships on Oct. 27. This was the third straight conference title for the Lumberjacks, who have been ranked No. 1 in the USTFCCCA national poll each week throughout the 2023 season.
The Chappal Ridge Cross Country Course will be the first 10k distance the Cougars will race this season. The course was formally an on-campus golf course until being renovated into a dedicated cross country course in 2017.
Following the NCAA Mountain Regional, the Cougars will compete one week later at the 2023 NCAA National Championships on the Panorama Championship Course in Earlysville, Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 18.
