HOCKLEY, Texas – BYU men's golf heads to the Club at Houston Oaks to tee it up at the Big 12 Match Play tournament beginning on Monday.

The tournament begins with each team in the conference participating in a pool play format, with seeding being based on the Big 12 Coaches ranking. The Cougars were ranked seventh, placing them in a pool with fellow newcomer Houston and reigning Big 12 Match Play champion Oklahoma.

After completing the pool play rounds, a bracket match play format will begin with teams competing based on the pool play results. The teams who emerge from pool play with the most points in their respective pools will compete in the championship bracket.

"I've heard great things about Houston Oaks and the Big 12 match play over the years," said head coach Bruce Brockbank. "To have a chance to compete in this event is a great opportunity for our guys. Match play will be a different challenge, considering most of our events are stroke play, but I look forward to playing against the teams in the Big 12 and seeing how we match up."

BYU's starting lineup for the tournament consists of Zac Jones, Cooper Jones, Kenau Akina, Cole Ponich, and Peter Kim, with Max Brenchley heading to his first tournament of the season.

"I'm excited for this week's format change being match play," said Brenchley. "Our team is coming off a great qualifier, and everyone is playing great golf. It will be fun to play against teams in the Big 12 and get to know some of them better. Our mindset with match play is to still focus on our game and what we can control and then see how it totals up at the end of the match."
