PROVO, Utah — BYU and SMU today announced the two schools have agreed to play a two-game football series in 2024 and 2027, while the Cougars and Weber State also announced future football games between the two in-state universities will take place in 2027 and 2030.

The Cougars will travel to face SMU in the Mustangs’ inaugural season as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2024 in Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas. SMU will come to Provo in 2027 to face BYU in LaVell Edwards Stadium.

BYU and SMU have met on four prior occasions, including two down-to-the-wire bowl games. BYU leads the overall series 4-0.

The last meeting came last season when the Cougars defeated the Mustangs, 24-23, at the New Mexico Bowl after BYU defensive back Jakob Robinson stopped the Mustangs short of the goal line on a two-point conversion attempt with only seconds left on the clock.  The first meeting was at the 1980 Holiday Bowl, which is also commonly called the “Miracle Bowl” for BYU’s rally from a 20-point deficit in the final four minutes for a 46-45 triumph. The Cougars scored their final touchdown on a successful Hail Mary pass as time expired from All-American quarterback Jim McMahon to All-American tight end Clay Brown.

BYU and SMU also met twice as members of the 16-team Western Athletic Conference with the Cougars earning wins in 1996 (31-3) in Provo and 1997 (19-16) at the Cotton Bowl stadium in Dallas.

The Cougars will renew their series with Weber State with games in Provo on Sept. 4, 2027, and Aug. 31, 2030. The two schools have met three times overall in football dating back to two games in the 1970s with BYU earning wins in 1973 (45-14) and 1979 (48-3). The last game in the series took place in 2012 with the Cougars winning 45-13.

BYU is in its first year as a member of the Big 12 Conference this season. To date, the Cougars have achieved a 5-3 record overall and 2-3 mark in Big 12 play.  BYU travels to face West Virginia on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on FS1.
