Three Cougars head to Boise for General Patton Invite

BYU men’s tennis will send three athletes to the General Patton Invite this weekend, hosted by Boise State. The Cougars will compete on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20-21 at the Appleton Tennis Center and Julia Davis Park.

PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s tennis will send three athletes to the General Patton Invite this weekend, hosted by Boise State. The Cougars will compete on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20-21.

Redd Owen, TJ Wells and Brian Chen will represent BYU in singles play. Owen and Wells will team up for doubles.

Time: Play begins at 9 a.m. MDT both days

Competitors: 38 participants will represent six schools in addition to BYU - Boise State, Eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana State, Portland State and Utah State.

Friday Initial Draw

9 a.m. - Redd Owen/TJ Wells vs. Brady Thomas (Eastern Washington)/Philipp Rein (Utah State)

Flight A Singles

12:30 p.m. - Redd Owen vs. Simon Kuszynski (Portland State)

Flight B Singles

11 a.m. - TJ Wells vs. Yu-Shun Lai (Idaho)

Flight C Singles

2:30 p.m. - Brian Chen vs. Brady Thomas (Eastern Washington)

The tournament will start Friday with two flights of doubles, followed by two flights of singles. Saturday will feature one flight for the main and consolation draws for both singles and doubles.

The weekend will mark Owen and Wells’ first time teaming up in doubles. Owen, a sophomore, is 5-2 in doubles play this fall with Jack Barnett. The pair reached the doubles final of the top flight at the ITA Bedford Cup last month, which wasn’t played due to Sunday play. Wells will aim for his first doubles victory as a Cougar.

Owen holds a 3-1 record in singles play this fall as Wells will aim to build momentum.
