TEMPE, Ariz. - Wally Thayne has been named No. 12 in the Mountain Regional singles rankings for his 2022-23 season performance, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced.
The sophomore earned WCC Second Team Doubles and All-WCC Honorable Mention Singles accolades in season where he competed in all 22 of the Cougars dual matches, totaling a team-high 13 singles victories. He achieved a national ranking of No. 123 in singles the week of April 4, a result of claiming the highest ranked win in team history on March 30 versus No. 20 Stanford when he defeated No. 5 Nishesh Basavareddy 7-5, 6-3.
The Newbury Park, Calif. native also defeated No. 69 Iiro Vasa (7-5, 7-5) to play a crucial role in BYU’s upset of No. 27 San Diego, the Toreros lone loss in WCC play.
Additional conference honors include WCC Doubles Team of the Week (February 7) with teammate Zach Fuchs and WCC Singles Player of Week (April 4).
