PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s golf fired a 10-under-par second round at the 76th Western Intercollegiate to move into third alone on Tuesday. Keanu Akina moved into a tie for fourth after a 2-under 68 in round two.

No. 9 Pepperdine holds the 36-hole lead at 27-under-par over No. 22 Oregon who is 14-shots off the lead at 13-under. No. 43 BYU sits in third at 8-under par with No. 50 Cal in fourth at 4-under and No. 8 Stanford rounding out the top-5 at 2-under-par.

After a double bogey at the 217-yard par-3 3rd, Akina (66-68—134) rattled off four birdies coming in to shoot 2-under for the day. With his second-round 68, Akina moved into a tie for fourth and is three shots off the lead held by Pepperdine’s Sam Choi and Oregon’s Owen Avrit at 9-under-par.  

Zac Jones (75-65—140) posted the round of the day for the Cougars, carding six birdies in his final 16 holes to card a 5-under 65 and move into a tie for 25th. Max Brenchley also sits in a tie for 25th at even par with Jones as he carded rounds of 71-69—140 over the first 36 holes.

Tyson Shelley is 1-back of Brenchley and Jones after shooting 69-72—141 to sit in a tie for 28th with one round to play. David Timmins and Carson Lundell sit at 2-over-par with rounds of 72-70—142 and 74-68—142 respectively.

The Cougars will tee it up in the final round beginning at 9:09 with Pepperdine, Oregon and Cal. Live scoring for the final 18 holes will be available at golfstat.com.
