BERTHOUD, Colo.— Three Cougars finished in the top-7 as No. 39 BYU men’s golf finished runner-up at the TPC Colorado at Heron Lakes Championship after rounds of 291-281-284—856 for an 8-under-par, 54-hole total.

David Timmins, Carson Lundell and Tyson Shelley led the Cougar charge as they looked to chase down the Colorado State Rams in the final round on Wednesday.

BYU was unable to overcome the 8-shot, 36-hole lead held by No. 16 Colorado State (287-277-288—852) who posted an even-par final round to take home the team title. BYU (291-281-284—856) shot 4-under in the final round to finish runner-up for the second time this season. 

North Dakota State (296-289-273—858) jumped up two spots to finish third behind a 15-under final round that featured three Bison players shooting sub-70. Boise State (291-291-292—874) finished fourth with Tarleton State (295-289-305) rounding out the top-5.

Timmins finished two-shots back of Colorado State’s Connor Jones, who is ranked the No. 15 player in the country according to the golfstat.com rankings, and took home the individual title. The senior improved each day as he fired rounds of 71-70-68—209 for a 7-under-par total. The Sandy, Utah native carded a bogey-free, 4-under 68 to earn the sixth top-10 of his career and second runner-up finish.

Carson Lundell finished at 5-under par, two back of Timmins. The 2022 All-American began the championship with a 4-over 76 that put him in a tie for 42nd before an 8-under, 64 in round two helped him jump 40 spots into second after 36 holes. The fifth-year senior turned in a 1-under final round to finish in a tie for third, his second top-3 finish in four events this season.

Tyson Shelley shot 3-under over 54 holes to grab his second top-10 of the young season and third top-15 in four events. The sophomore continued his breakout season in Colorado as he posted rounds of 69-72-72—213 to finish in solo-seventh.

Max Brenchley turned in an 8-over total to finish tied for 34th for BYU with rounds of 75-775-73—224. Zac Jones rounded out the scoring for the Cougar team with scores of 81-75-79—235.

Keanu Akina was the low individual for the Cougars as he grabbed his highest finish of the season. The junior from Kahuku, Hawai’i turned in rounds of 72-77-70—219 to finish tied for 13th.

Elijah Turner earned the highest finish of his career at TPC Colorado this week as he recorded rounds of 75-71-75—221. The senior shot 5-over-par to tie for 22nd, the first top-25 of his career.

Brock Goyen posted scores of 76-80-76—232 to complete the scoring for BYU at the TPC Colorado at Heron Lakes Championship.

After a 10-day break, the Cougars will return to action at Poppy Hills Golf Course for the Saint Mary’s Invitational on Oct. 30-Nov. 2. The invitational in Pebble Beach, California will conclude BYU’s fall season.
