PROVO, Utah – The BYU gymnastics team finished the 2019 season ranked No. 21 in the nation, advancing to NCAA Regionals for the 10th consecutive season.

The Cougars ended the season with a 196.090 average and a 196.570 NQS and was highlighted by receiving a 197.000 for the first time since 2004. In the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Championships, BYU finished in third place behind Boise State and Southern Utah.

SEASON HONORS

Head coach Guard Young was named MRGC Coach of the Year and junior Shannon Evans earned MRGC Gymnast of the Year. Evans also earned All-MRGC First Team for her performances on vault and in the all-around.

Abbey Miner received All-MRGC First Team honors for vault and second team for beam while Helody Cyrenne was All-MRGC First Team on beam and second team for the uneven bars.

On the season, Evans earned MRGC weekly honors all 10 weeks of the season, including Gymnast of the Week four times. Five other gymnasts earned at least one weekly honor throughout the season.

POSTSEASON HIGHLIGHTS

In the NCAA Regionals, the Cougars were selected to compete in Baton Rouge. With a new format, BYU competed in the first session of the Second Round. With No. 6 Utah, No. 11 Minnesota and Arkansas as the opponents, the Cougars were faced with a competitive matchup.

BYU scored a 195.550 to take fourth place in the quad meet as Utah and Minnesota moved on to the Regional Finals. Evans earned a 39.225 in the all-around to lead the team, placing fifth in the first session. Cyrenne tied for first place on the uneven bars as she scored a 9.900.

REGULAR SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

The Cougars hosted the Utes to start the season, scoring a 196.475 at the Marriott Center. That was the highest score in a season opener in program history. The score earned them the No. 6 spot in the national rankings.

MRGC competition began with back-to-back meets against Utah State as BYU earned a pair of wins.

In March, the Cougars traveled north to take on then No. 11 Boise State. Evans' career-best 39.575 gave her the all-around title and led the team to a 197.000 score. Evans also claimed the title on vault and floor while Cyrenne took first on beam with a career-best 9.925.

Senior Night recognized Natasha Marsh and Cheyenne Hill as BYU topped MRGC opponent Southern Utah with a 196.550.

LOOKING AHEAD

After losing two seniors, the young team will look to the leadership of Evans who will be competing in her senior year. 

For the 2020 season, Young has thus far only signed Maya Page. The Spring, Texas, native competes for AIM Athletics and was most recently member of the 2018 Texas Team Champions.
