The Cougarettes were selected by USA Cheer from hundreds of teams around the country to represent the United States in the team hip hop division. After two days of competition, BYU finished second to Japan which took home the Gold Medal. The Philippines finished third to capture the Bronze Medal. Other countries competing in the hip hop division included Mexico, Italy, Ecuador, Germany, England, Chile, Russia, Scotland, Austria and Guatemala.

“It was such an honor and an incredible opportunity to represent the United States and compete against teams from around the world,” said BYU Cougarettes head coach Jodi Maxfield. “The hip hop division was very competitive and we were so proud to bring home the Silver Medal. Being on stage representing the USA is something we’ll never forget.”

Maxfield has been the head coach of the BYU Cougarettes since 1990, and her teams have won 19 NDA National titles, six of them in the hip hop category.

In addition to hip hop, the 2019 ICU World Cheerleading Championships features a variety of team competitions in areas such as freestyle pom, jazz, coed cheer and all girl cheer.
