PROVO, Utah – BYU head softball coach Gordon Eakin announced the promotion of Pete Meredith to associate head softball coach Wednesday.
Meredith will continue to oversee pitching and also work closely with catchers, infielders, outfielders and hitters.
“Coach Meredith has been around the highest levels of fastpitch softball for as long as I can remember and is a legend in this game,” Eakin said. “Pete has been successful at the highest level over and over again as a pitcher. He has a great softball mind and the patience necessary to teach. Over the last four years, he has shown how deeply he cares for BYU and our student-athletes on and off the field.”
Meredith joined the Cougar coaching staff in August 2013 and has helped coach the team to a West Coast Conference championship and NCAA regionals appearance in each of his four seasons. In 2017, he helped guide BYU to a No.21/20 finish in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and NCAA Women's Softball RPI in 2017.
Additionally, Meredith coached McKenna Bull to All-America honors last season, BYU’s first All-American since 2013. Bull was also the WCC Pitcher of the Year for three-straight years (2015-17) and a four-time NFCA All-Region honoree. She finished her career as the most successful pitcher in program history with the top spot for single season and career records in wins, complete games, shutouts, saves, innings pitched and strikeouts. Bull also finished in the top three in ERA, strikeouts per seven innings and opponent batting average. Additionally, she threw 57.2-consecutive scoreless innings her senior season, a BYU record.
The Cougars have won 25 WCC Pitcher of the Week honors since 2014, including a program-best 11 in 2017. In four seasons at BYU, the team has pitched 49 shutouts, increasing the number each season: five in 2014, 11 in 2015, 14 in 2016 and 19 in 2017. The Cougars have thrown four no-hitters, including two in 2016. The pitching staff has averaged 356 strikeouts per season in Meredith's time at BYU.
A 12-time ASA All-American, Meredith pitched the U.S. to a gold medal at the 1988 World Championships and won silver at the 1995 Pan American Games. He played professional men's fastpitch for Sportsman Enterprises, Dave Frye Plastering, Trans Aire International, Larry Miller Toyota and the Farm in Madison, Wisconsin. Meredith pitched in a record 23-consecutive International Softball Congress World Tournaments and set records for most tournament wins (61), no hitters (8), strikeouts in a tournament (100) and strikeouts in a game (21). He also holds the record for most wins in ASA/USA Championship play (55-27). Meredith was named to the All-World Team seven times and is a four-time Team USA selection.
He was inducted into the ASA/USA National Softball Hall of Fame Class of 2016 and the International Softball Congress Hall of Fame in 2007.
A native of Dunedin, New Zealand, Meredith and wife Angie have one daughter, Olivia.
