PROVO, Utah - The Cougars continue preparations for the upcoming season as the white team came out on top in the annual Blue and White meet on Friday night.
“An event like this is great for the girls to get out in front of the lights and the people,” head coach Guard Young said. “For the girls to get this first meet under their belts is really good. We do our best to simulate this in the gym, but an actual meet is so different."
The white team came out on top as the meet featured high scores from both returning gymnasts and the freshmen. Sophomore Shannon Evans earned first place in the all-around for the meet, while seniors Mackenzie Douglas and Brittni Hawes were the night’s top performers on vault and bars, respectively. Sophomore Briana Pearson and freshman Abbey Miner tied for first on floor and two freshmen, Abby Boden and Jordan Danbury, posted the highest scores on beam. Boden was also the all-around runner-up.
“Some of our freshmen are just phenomenal,” Young said. “It’s amazing that Abby (Boden) is doing something like taking second place in the all-around as a walk-on. Then Abbey Miner throws a huge double layout on the floor. It’s great to have our tumbling on such a high level.”
BYU will open the season on Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. against University of Utah at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, UT. The home opener will be on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. against Cal Berkeley.
