Quotes

BYU head coach Rose

About Collinsworth:

"I love the way he plays. He is getting more and more confidence. I like him with the ball in his hands, driving in the lane, making good decisions and being able to finish. What I think is really impressive is his ability to rebound from that position. He got a lot of minutes today where he was forced down on that baseline because we played four guards with one big guy so he was responsible for a lot of those offside rebounds and he grabbed a lot of them. And we needed it.

About the weapons on this team:

"If you look at our teams the last three to five years we have had multiple guys who could score 20 plus points on different nights at different times but I think the difference is consistency. With this group here I think consistently we have a really good group of scorers. And I think we have some really good scorers on the bench who we haven’t been able to find a lot of time for so I hope we can keep their confidence up because we are going to need all those guys."

About the Utah game:

"They are really talented, really deep, really well coached. I’m sure it’s going to be a really competitive game. This is a pretty important game and it has been that way for a really long time. The difference is there is only one shot. For so many years we played them and even on the second time there was a chance you would play them a third time in the conference tournament but this one is a one shot deal so hopefully you play your best."

About playing a ranked Utah:

"It’s a great situation to have teams who are nationally ranked to come to your building. It is one of those deals like the San Diego State game in Maui where we have a real opportunity so hopefully we can take advantage of it."

On the potential of this team:

"I really believe it will be up to our front line guys, to see how they develop. Hopefully in the next four or five games we will have some real opportunities to improve."

Chase Fischer

On Collinsworth:

“It’s awesome. He’s a great player. He does that almost every game and almost gets a triple double. He opens up so much stuff by rebounding, passing and scoring. I think with his leadership, what he brings to us every day in that aspect, is even bigger. No surprise to us.”

On team offense:

“It’s kind of crazy. I always think we aren’t going to get 90 today and we always end up with 90. I think it is style of play and we have a lot of unselfish guys who share the ball and are good shooters. It never ceases to amaze me that we get to 90.”

On playing Utah:

“They are a really good team this year and it is a great opportunity for us. I’m excited to be a part of that."

Kyle Collinsworth

On his triple double:

“Credit to my teammates. We have such great shooters it makes it really easy to get assists being the point guard.”

On being one of only five players in BYU history to get a triple double:

“It’s a great honor. I look forward to get more and continue to get better as a team and as an individual.”

On the slow start:

“We need to come out with a little better focus and more energy then keep that up for 40 minutes.”

On playing Utah:

“I’m going to enjoy tonight, rest Sunday then we’ll see on Monday and get ready for Utah.”

“It will be exciting for players, coaches, fans, spectators. I look forward to it and getting ready.”

“They’re good every year. Even when we’re good they’re not or when they’re good and we’re not, it doesn’t matter. It is a rivalry game and it’s going to be a good game no matter what.”

Hawaii head coach Benjy Taylor

On BYU's team:

"BYU's a great team. They know their roles. They play together. They'll make you pay for turnovers by scoring in transition. They've got a lot of guys that can score in multiple ways. They shoot well. They're a very tough team and I expect they'll be a tough out come tournament time."

On the outcome:

"We competed for three quarters of the game. I liked for the most part what our guys did. For a large majority of the game, we were right there with them. It's just that small stretch of the game where we let them take over. They're good enough that you can't let up if you want to hang in there."

On BYU's size:

"Due to injury, we were a little outsized. Their big guys fought well underneath and they did well on the offensive glass. They all know their roles. The big guys know how to distribute and move the ball."

Hawaii guard Aaron Valdes

On the atmosphere:

"The atmosphere was great. They always bring a lot of fans. They're loud. Playing in front of them will give us good experience for future games that we'll play."

On the outcome:

"We can't make any excuses. BYU just outplayed us for about four minutes at the end of the first half and four minutes early in the second half."
